Workin' Girl!

Heidi began corn detasseling yesterday. Pioneer hires kids in our area to do this every summer. It's hot and hard work, but she seems up to the task. You have to be 13 to do this, so this is her first year. It's nice because the bus picks her up right at the house and drops her off when she is done. Most of the kids are picked up down at the local grocery store, but fortunately for us the bus drives right by our house. I'm so happy about that because otherwise I'd have to get the other kids up and out of the house early every morning. Today she left the house at 6:45 and returned at 4:30.....that's a long hard day in the fields. They walk up and down the rows pulling out the corn tassels. Her crew did 288 acres today.

Yesterday, on her first day, she came home and told me that the ambulance had to come out to where they were working. Why? Because one of the boys that was detasseling got run over by a deer! Yes.......a deer! They are working in a field of corn.......pretty high corn. The deer came running across the field at full speed and did not see this boy who was working there and ran right into him. Goodness!! It never occured to me that I would need to be concerned about such a thing! Heidi found out today that the boy broke his leg.
So, here she is in the get up she wears in the field. Long sleeves, gloves, long pants and glasses to keep from getting cut by the leaves of the corn. A floppy hat to keep the sun off (teal..her favorite color) and a BIG jug of water!!

Notice Heidi's haircut in the photo above. She got about 8 inches cut from her hair. Isn't it cute! :) Her Daddy was in mourning for a day or two. ;)

I did notice her haircut and it is adorable! What a hard job and who would even THINK a deer would be in there?!! Poor kid!
